Higher Bill

PSE Rate Increases

July 03, 20241 min read

Well, there it is, I like to stay abreast of what's going on with bills and regulation in the area and post to https://universalelectricpnw.com/blog/ but somehow missed that PSE is already working on their next round of increases, a longer article is here: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/climate-lab/puget-sound-energy-proposes-rate-hikes-to-pay-for-hydro-and-wind-power/

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has proposed new rate hikes to address power shortages and fund the transition to cleaner energy sources like hydro and wind power. Following a 15.8% increase in residential electrical rates in 2023, the typical residential electric customer will see their monthly bill increase by $7.84 starting in 2025, with an additional $11.20 in 2026. For natural gas customers, the increase will be $13.96 in 2025 and $1.51 in 2026. These measures are essential as recent extreme weather and higher-than-expected energy usage have strained PSE's resources, prompting calls for conservation. PSE continues to invest in renewable energy infrastructure to ensure a more sustainable future while balancing the demand for reliable power supply (Chronline) (UTC).

These rate adjustments are crucial for enhancing the infrastructure needed for reliable energy delivery. PSE's plans include significant investments in hydro and wind power projects, such as a $530 million wind farm in Montana and $430 million in upgrades to the Baker River hydroelectric project. The recent outage at the Jackson Prairie gas storage plant highlighted vulnerabilities in the energy supply during peak demand periods, underscoring the importance of conservation measures. Residents of cities served by PSE, including Renton, Bremerton, and Port Orchard, should stay informed about these developments and understand how rate changes will impact their utility bills and contribute to a greener future (Chronline) (Puget Sound Energy).
